1915 . Feb. enlisted as 3857 Private Cyril Gordon Martin, 2/5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment (Territorial Force). This battalion supplied drafts to the 1/5th battalion in France. 

He served in overseas post 1915. Since 20 Augt 1915 the 1/5th battalion became the Pioneer Battalion of the 48th (South Midland) Division and joined them on the Somme at Hebuterne.

1917 Nov . the battalion went with the division to Italy, and in Nov 1918 was in Austria, east of Trent. It returned to England in 1919.

1920 Feb 12, Re-enlisted as M/22863 EMT 62670 Private Cyril Gordon Martin. 1155 Coy. (M.T.) Royal Army Service Corps at East Grinstead aged 24 for 2 years as a Leaner Driver
