He was listed as an army birth/baptism in 1890 and his father was still with the army until 1898, the assumption being that he was born at Norton Barracks.

1919 married Annie Carruthers in Newcastle upon Tyne, There do not appear to be any children of this marriage

1920 Sep 20. Died at Dublin, age 33. Downton and Sgt Albert Sweeney were murdered by Sgt George Henry Pollington.

Husband of Annie Downton, of 55, Joan St., Benwell. Newcastle-on-Tyne (she appears to have remarried to Robert Johnson in 1927)
